Bergen County’s Best Kept Gardening Secret

Goffle Brook Farm & Garden Center

After the mad rush of spring planting ,garden maintenance, and Mother’s Day, it is a relief to take a more leisurely, yet studied approach to the coming garden seasons during the remainder of May. Sure you can pick up a few “memorial day theme” inspired porch/patio containers and plant a mass or two of red, white and blue annuals for a patriotic sense of appeal; but what’s next? I want to make a statement, but where do I start?

Well we can help you attain that vision with our diverse selections of seasonal color annuals, tropicals, porch/patio containers, garden decor and don’t forget “June is Perennial Month” and we’re stocking up with some new selections for this year.

Consider this. Many of us are envisioning a tastefully decorated outdoor living area profusely blooming in spectacular displays of Mother Nature’s splendor. Who doesn’t like a relaxing atmosphere to partake in a cup of tea with family and friends, or perhaps just relax and read a book, or just sit quietly and watch and enjoy the serenity of it all, the birds chirping, butterflies on wing, you know where we’re coming from.

Well we can help you attain that vision with our diverse selections of seasonal color annuals, tropicals, porch/patio containers, garden decor and don’t forget “June is Perennial Month” and we’re stocking up with some new selections for this year. Create a peaceful retreat to get away from it all within.

May’s Featured Perennial | Osteospermum Spider Purple

Add a different look to your garden space with a dark purple flower with a very individual look. True to its spider name, web like tubular petals come off a darker centre, creating a beautiful mix of purple shades. The foliage has a clump habit in true contrast, making it suitable for planting over a large area. Plant out in full sun or partial shade.

These gorgeous ground cover African Daisies will create a mounded ground cover for your garden, or look equally stunning in a large pot, making them an excellent choice as a container plant. Spider Purple daisies pair well with traditional bedding plants, such as ageratum, dusty miller, and geraniums in containers and in the garden bed look stunning with Lambs Ear (Stachys byzantina). Osteospermum Spider Purple are deer resistant, heat tolerant, and an excellent pollinator plant for attracting butterflies and bees.

Spider Purple has dark purple flowers with an unusual petals shaped like spoons that profusely bloom from spring until fall, giving you long-lasting splashes of vibrant color in any garden. The petals on this zany Osteo curl inward mid-petal, creating a spoon shape at the tips.

Gardening with vegetables…

One of my best gardening memories is of planting vegetables again after waiting so long. And now that the weather and soil are warming up there’s a plethora of good eats to get in the ground, all the while basking in the sun’s warmth, working the soil with your hands, and getting dirt beneath your fingernails. The lettuce varieties grow best between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Leaf lettuce generally matures fast, which makes it ideal for home garden production. Most leaf-type lettuce varieties will mature in seven to eight weeks.

Well have you covered there with a numerous variety of vegetable garden plants to choose from.

Container Gardening With Flowers And Herbs

Think beyond garden beds and create captivating containers, filled with lush color and fascinating texture. Container gardening is the perfect way to exercise your green thumb whether you live in a house with a yard, a patio home, or a condo with a balcony. Herb container gardening is one of the best things about summer! I’ve been planting, clipping, and enjoying herbs grown in all kinds of containers for years and years. Herbs are easy to grow and have so many uses.

Growing herbs in a container is quite easy because herbs are not demanding plants. A little tending yields a container filled with pretty aromatic plants that can be snipped often, used in the kitchen, and more! The herb shown here is Chocolate Mint Basil in a container outside my kitchen door. It is now 3 years old and overwinters in its pot right out back in the herb garden bed and as you can see if thriving quite nicely. Chocolate Mint is a delightful herb that loves to be harvested. The more this herb is cut back, the more tender shoots it produces. Use Mentha piperita in teas, as a garnish for desserts, or in potpourris. Mint can be harvested all through the summer.

Chocolate Mint is a good choice for the edible garden, but it is also well-suited for use in outdoor pots and containers.

It is extremely beneficial to use fresh herbs daily in moderate quantities, as they are packed with many health-boosting compounds.

Indoor Houseplants

Houseplants have been proven to improve air quality, raise humidity levels, and even help people to fight common illnesses. According to NASA, indoor plants can remove up to 87 percent of toxins from the air.

Houseplants bring life into a room and can even enhance mood. Those that flower bring color and sometimes even scent into your home. Foliage plants are available for all types of light conditions and can add a touch of green to any home or office. And, you’d be surprised how some can survive on the most minimal attention.

Whether your home has low light, indirect light, or a high light situation, we have a great selection of plants in all shapes and sizes with something for everyone including the young gardeners in your family. Plants are a great way to teach youngsters about mother nature and her wonders. We work really hard to keep new and interesting plants coming in on a regular basis, if you don’t see what you are looking for, just ask one our staff and we will do our best to locate it for you.

Jonathan Green Lawn Care Products

Introducing Jonathan Green’s The New American Lawn Plan for all homeowners with lawns. The New American Lawn is a cutting-edge lawn care program that not only feeds the lawn, like every program on the market today, but, unlike all others, FEEDS THE SOIL! That’s right, the soil.

Healthy soil is the foundation for all great lawns. Your soil must be free of compaction, possess healthy microbial populations, and have the correct pH or your “great lawn” journey will not happen. Think about it. Would you plant your annuals and perennials in a poor quality potting soil? Of course not. So why not ensure that your grass is growing in quality soil, too? The New American Lawn Primer Video makes this happen!
